Spectrumism is a color-centered painting methodology founded by Charles Johnson in 1999. Rooted in classical color theory, the approach emphasizes primary and secondary hues as structural anchors for form, light, and compositional balance.
By referencing the visible spectrum (ROYGBIV) while limiting the active palette, Spectrumism explores how chromatic contrast and layered application create dimensional movement within abstraction.
The work considers not only reflected light — what we see — but also the conceptual presence of absorbed color, inviting viewers to examine relationships between visibility, energy, and structure within the painted surface.
